In Remembrance of Ann Nelson

Ann Nelson’s sudden passing has touched so many in the hiking and climbing community, but her contribution on Washington Hikers and Climbers as an administrator and her accomplishments on the trails and mountaintops were only a small facet of the generous and fulfilling life she led. Beyond achieving accolades as a professor in theoretical physics and raising two children, and as a loving wife to David Kaplan, Ann steadfastly strived to promote inclusion for the disadvantaged and to enable opportunities for those who were marginalized, discriminated against, or suffered from mental illness or other afflictions.

Ann Nelson’s sudden passing has touched so many in the hiking and climbing community, but her contribution on Washington Hikers & Climbers (WHC) as an administrator and her accomplishments on the trails and mountaintops were only a small facet of the generous and fulfilling life she led. 

Beyond achieving accolades as a professor in theoretical physics and raising two children, and as a loving wife to David Kaplan, Ann steadfastly strived to promote inclusion for the disadvantaged and to enable opportunities for those who were marginalized, discriminated against, or suffered from mental illness or other afflictions.

Recovery Beyond is an organization that provides innovative services and programs to improve the rate of addiction recovery. One of their programs, Climbing Out, is a program where professional guides and mentors supply participants with a strong, steady diet of physical training, technical guidance, and personal support and encouragement necessary for summiting Rainier. Being roped up together is better; on a mountain & in life.

  3. I share in the loss for Ann's parents, Howard and Dorothy Ann Nelson, her sisters and their families and of course her husband, David Kaplan. Ann will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and especially those of us who knew Ann as she was growing up.
  4. In loving memory of Ann, who with husband David, daughter Sierra and son Gabriel, welcomed our daughter into their family for a year as an exchange student from Italy. Ann. we will never forget your hospitality and greatness of spirit.
  5. My daughter Ann loved the mountains and also loved helping to create opportunities for disadvantaged people. I am glad to learn that an organization such as yours exists.
